A comparative analysis was conducted and the main differences in the definitions of these terms before and after the entry into force of the latest version of the Law of Ukraine «On Metrology and Metrological Activity» were presented. Based on the example of the mass standard, it was revealed the meaning of the terms «primary standard» and «national prototype» and pointed out the main mistakes in their application. It was shown in the specific examples how fundamental the difference in definitions of the same terms can be in different terminology systems and how important it is to adhere to terminology in metrology.
